The Game of Illusions
Dimensions: 31 inch x 40.5 inch
Material Used/Technique: Mixed Medium
The chessboard appeals to me as a symbol of contradictions as well as equality. Regardless of the contrasting colours, the pieces on a chessboard, or the squares, are equal to their opposites and I find this a potent symbol for equality. While researching about the symbolism online, I also came across an artwork titled the "Impossible Chess" by Escher. Inspired by it, I attempted to recreate an illusion where we see the same thing when we look at the board from above and we do when we look at it from below - giving everything an equal position before the eyes of the viewer. The ladder reflects the idea that everyone climbs and glass in life. I have made a broad frame for the painting because I believe this image defines equality - a holistic fact of life.
